Amul model can go beyond milk and dairy sector: Amit Shah

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that the success of the world’s largest milk cooperative Amul shows that the contribution of the cooperative sector will be huge in making it a $5 trillion economy.

In a program organized to commemorate 75 years of Amul, which was started as a cooperative movement in 1946 in Anand, Gujarat, Shri Shah said that the cooperative sector would also prove to be important in making the agriculture sector self-reliant.

Mr Shah, who has been given the portfolio of the newly created ministry, said the time has come to take the Amul model beyond the milk and dairy sectors.

“Today, many farmers have turned to organic farming, but they do not have any platform to sell the produce in India and the world. Can cooperative organizations like Amul help them in this? The time has come to think on those lines,” he said.
