Indian business tycoon Anand Mahindra has come out in support of ‘Neobolt’, an indigenous motorized wheelchair battery powered vehicle. The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras research team led by Professor Sujatha Srinivasan, Department of Mechanical Engineering, launched the vehicle through start-up Neomotion.
Anand Mahindra in his tweet dedicated the Chennai-based company Neomotion to providing greater mobility to people with disabilities and announced that he plans to support them.
Tweeting the video, Mahindra wrote, “They did a demo of the device and as you can see, it is simple, well designed and eco-friendly. More than his ingenuity, I was impressed by his commitment to having a startup that does well as well as does good. I plan to support them.”
Equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the Neobolt can travel at a maximum speed of 25 kmph up to 25 kmph and empowers users with a convenient, safe and low-cost mode of outdoor mobility compared to other vehicles. the release said here on Monday.
The researchers collaborated extensively with various organizations and hospitals and built the product based on user experiences and continuous design adjustments.
Swastik Saurav Dash, an IIT-M alumnus, is also the co-founder of the start-up and the CEO of ‘Neomotion’.
The company’s personal wheelchair NeoFly was available here 39,900 while the NeoBolt motorized add-on 55,000. Users can pre-book their orders at 1,000 by registering on the company’s website.
Srinivasan, who is also the Faculty Head, TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2), had said, “The vision of our center is to change the disability landscape in India by creating functional and affordable assistive devices. Wheelchair users are typically limited to four. the walls of their house, which affects their community participation.”
Srinivasan further added, “Neomotion, R2D2’s startup at IIT-Madras, aims to change the landscape for India and the world through game-changing and world-class wheelchair products designed and manufactured in India.”
