Pawar also appreciated the Bombay High Court order directing the BMC to accept Rutuja Latke’s resignation so that he can contest the bypolls.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday demanded unopposed election of Rutuja Latte, candidate of Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction, in the Andheri East Assembly bypolls to be held on November 3. Ramesh Latte’s wife Rutuja Latte died. By-election is necessary against Murji Patel of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Incidentally, October 17 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations.

“The term of the new member (MLA) will be only one-and-a-half years. The by-election is being held due to the unfortunate death of Ramesh Latte. His wife is contesting from this seat. Hanged were councilors and MLAs. His contribution should be taken into account,” Pawar said.

Huge efforts are made to contest bypolls, which is not required when the term is only for one year, he said, adding that five to six months are spent with the election code of conduct.

He also appreciated the Bombay High Court order directing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to accept Rutuja Latke’s resignation so that he can contest the by-polls.

Pawar said it is good that the High Court has given appropriate directions to the authorities concerned.

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray wrote to Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis for not fielding his party’s candidate for the bypolls as a “reverence” to the late Ramesh Latte.
