There have been two incidents of rape at Andhra Pradesh railway stations in two weeks.
Amaravati:
Andhra Pradesh’s newly-appointed Home Minister Tanathi Vanitha has courted controversy for her comments on the recent incidents of rape in the state. He said the gang rape of a 25-year-old pregnant woman on May 1 at Repalle railway station was not intended but took place under unforeseen circumstances. Earlier, she had said that a mother is responsible for the safety of the child in the context of sexual assault on a minor in Vizag.
She has attributed the incidents of rape to “psychological condition” and poverty and has even claimed that the accused did not intend to rape. It happened in an “unexpected manner” as the men were drunk and attacked the victim’s husband with the intention of robbing him, but he intervened and then the rape happened ‘unexpectedly’, ‘these things happen’, she had said.
“The woman tried to avert the attack on the husband, then some things happened unexpectedly,” he said, adding that not having enough railway police force available cannot be blamed. He said that more CCTV cameras would be installed at railway stations.
The opposition Telugu Desam Party has pulled up the Home Minister, calling him irresponsible.
