Tesla is protesting the inclusion of phone beaming technology

Tesla phones have been resistant to adopting beaming technology such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but now a developer has managed to make Android Auto work on the Tesla infotainment system. They have made it work through a browser and an app on the Google Play Store. This feature has been requested for a long time but Tesla has ignored these requests. In fact, Elon Musk even once said that Tesla was working on its own solution for phone projection software, which hasn’t seen the light of day. It has a closed system where it vertically controls what happens inside its hardware and software. But a developer named AAWireless is teasing a workaround by using a web browser on the Tesla browser called Tesla-Android Auto inside the Tesla infotainment system. An early version of the software was leaked in June.

Tesla owners can download the app, which costs $6.50, and use it. Users can connect their phone to the car over Bluetooth and connect the Tesla to the phone’s hotspot via WiFi and then visit Androidwheels.com via the browser.

0 notes

It allows users to take advantage of services like Google Maps or Waze directly from Tesla’s central console. Users can also access streaming services like Apple Music or Youtube Music which are not supported natively. The app is currently in beta and carandbike cannot independently verify how well it works. For what it’s worth, the developer notes a few issues –
– Video may become unresponsive after switching to reverse. Refreshing the page will fix it.
– The app uses the native FFMPEG binary on the phone side, which can die in the background on some occasions. This won’t happen during drives, during more setup or if you close Tesla’s browser multiple times and switch it back on. Sadly, this requires shutting down and restarting the TeslAA service.
– Performance also depends on phone and Tesla browser. Low power phones may not be able to stream 720p properly.
– Wireless charging can cause phone overheating while using AA (happens on my OnePlus 8 Pro), I can avoid this by using wired charger (a bit unfortunate, but it is again phone dependent).
– If you lose your mobile phone signal for a long period of time, Telsa may decide to disconnect from WiFi, and you will not be able to reconnect until you are back in an area with mobile coverage.
