Andhra Pradesh government is going to introduce English medium in all degree colleges from the academic year 2021-22. This will be done to improve the career prospects of the students.
As per the Times report, this year 2.62 lakh students have taken admission in degree colleges across AP, out of which only 65,989 students have taken admission in Telugu medium which means 75 per cent students have taken admission before the government’s decision was announced. I have opted for English medium only. of India.
The state government is also planning to start special training programs for degree college students to promote English speaking and writing skills, the report said.
However, this is in contrast to the central government’s emphasis on regional languages. NS National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 Study in mother tongue is encouraged. The government had earlier said that children coming from rural areas would benefit from this.
NEP 2020 had also suggested that no student should be discriminated against in higher education institutions because of their language preference. It had said that colleges and universities would also “use the mother tongue/vernacular language as the medium of instruction, and/or offer programs bilingually” as this would help increase the enrollment rate.
ahead, Engineering courses now offered in five regional languages Which includes Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. AICTE conducted a survey earlier this year with a total of 83,195 undergraduate engineering students, of which 43.79 per cent students said they want to study in regional languages. According to the survey, 12,487 students wanted to learn in Hindi and 3,991 in Telugu out of 7,818.
Not just in higher education, NEP 2020 also suggests vaccination of regional languages in schools. Wherever possible, the medium of instruction at least up to grade 5, but preferably up to grade 8 and beyond, shall be the home language/mother tongue/local language/regional language, it said. For senior classes, the home/local language “will continue to be taught as a language, wherever possible, by both public and private schools.”
