New Delhi: The high-powered committee, which advises the government on policy decisions regarding education, has not met since September 2019. ThePrint has learned that there are no immediate plans for a meeting either.
The Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) is the highest decision-making body for matters related to education. Its members include the Union Minister of Education, Minister of State for Education, Education Ministers of various states and heads of bodies such as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). among others.
According to the Ministry of Education RecordThe general practice of the Board has been to hold one meeting every year. While there have been no meetings for several years previously, this is the first time in a decade that the committee has not met for a three-year period and there are no immediate plans for a future meeting.
The 2019 meeting also took place after a delay of over one-and-a-half years. Important work schedule The draft National Education Policy (NEP) was discussed for this meeting. There has been no CABE meeting on the implementation of the policy.
Ministry sources cited Covid as the reason for the committee not meeting in 2020 and 2021. However, despite schools, colleges and other educational departments fully resuming physical instruction, 2022 also did not hold any meetings.
ThePrint sent a detailed questionnaire to the education ministry spokesperson, but did not receive a response. There was also no answer to the question whether CABE has been dissolved or replaced by another body. The report will be updated after receiving the response.
A source in the ministry, however, said that even though CABE meetings have not taken place, discussions on policy matters are on. The source said the ministry holds regular meetings with representatives of states and other government departments.

Past CABE Meetings
The last CABE meeting was chaired by the then HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal. He said discussing the draft NEP “in the spirit of cooperative federalism” would lead to a “healthy and enriching” dialogue between the central and state governments.
The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2018-19 was also released during the meeting.
The issues discussed in the 2018 meeting included preparing launch Operation Digital Board, in which smart boards were to be installed in government classrooms to remove regional disparities and grading autonomy of higher education institutions.
