Apple has been ordered to pay iPhone 4S users for slowing down their devices after they updated to iOS 9 in 2015. The lawsuit was filed seven years ago, and the company has finally decided to settle the matter. Consumers claimed that Apple had falsely marketed the iOS 9 update to offer better performance on supported devices, including the iPhone 4S.
Apple has agreed to pay $15 (about Rs 1,125) to iPhone 4S users who faced poor performance issues with their units after upgrading to the new iOS version at the time.
According to reports, the lawsuit against Apple was filed in December 2015 by a group of iPhone 4S owners based out of New York and New Jersey. This isn’t the first time Apple has been accused of slowing down iPhones.
The company had slashed the battery of other iPhone models to force buyers to upgrade to the new model. Apple was forced to add battery health indicators to models, which allowed people to see how their iPhone’s battery was behaving over time.
You could say that the iPhone 4S is a really old model now, and it hardly takes a dent in Apple’s coffers to receive $15 as compensation to complainants. But such decisions put consumers off, and their faith in the justice system to give them relief is further strengthened.

Since the lawsuit was filed in the US, we’re not sure if Apple is going to offer similar payments to people who have bought an iPhone 4S in other markets and upgraded to the iOS 9 version.
For those eligible for payment, Apple is likely to set up a website where they can sign up with their iPhone 4S IMEI number to claim the money. Apple offers a longer software update time frame than most manufacturers in the market.
