Cupertino-based tech giant Apple may authorize its service technicians to be able to perform Face ID repairs on the iPhone XS and newer phones without the need to replace the entire iPhone.
According to a report on ledgeApple may soon provide Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers with access to a new TrueDepth camera service portion that includes Face ID and the front camera module.
After which, stores and authorized providers will perform same-unit repairs if the device is plagued with Face ID issues rather than replace it.
As described in an internal memo by Apple, the move will reduce the carbon footprint of its products by reducing the number of whole-unit repairs. If it does, it also means that iPhone XS model owners and newer will no longer need to set up a new iPhone and will likely lose data simply because of the Face ID issue.
It is not yet clear when this new repair process will be implemented. The company has only told the technicians that they will receive the training and documentation at a later date.
Apple originally introduced Face ID technology on the iPhone X.
The news comes a few months after Apple announced a new “self-service repair” program, another move that could make repairs easier. Through this initiative, Apple will instruct customers to repair their devices at home while selling parts and equipment. When customers return their used parts after repairing their equipment, they will also receive a recycling credit.
Apple said the “self-service repair” program will begin in the United States in early 2022 and then expand to other countries.
