Apple supplier plant near Chennai to remain closed this week after protests: Report

Apple supplier Foxconn’s plant near Chennai in southern India will remain closed this week, government sources told Reuters. This could hurt the production of smartphones coming from the Foxconn India unit.

Foxconn also makes smartphones for Xiaomi India.

The Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police said a five-day holiday has been declared at the plant.

Scores of employees of Foxconn Technology India Pvt Ltd protested on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway after around 150 workers at the iPhone maker’s factory were hospitalized for food poisoning. Police on Sunday detained hundreds of people for blocking highways, according to Reuters news agency.

According to the Chennai Police, Foxconn factory workers and their relatives protested against food poisoning, which blocked the Chennai-Bengaluru highway for several hours.

“There was an outbreak of acute diarrheal disease among the employees of Foxconn,” a statement from the Tiruvallur district administration said. It said 256 workers were treated as outpatients and 159 were hospitalised, of which 155 have already been discharged.

“About 70 women and 22 men have been detained for blocking the highway since Saturday,” the news agency reported.
