Are your tea leaves adulterated? Try this simple test by FSSAI to find out

Tea is one of the most favorite aromatic beverages in the world. Many people consume it in the morning or after a long day’s work to refresh themselves. Most of the tea connoisseurs show a deep love for the drink and are passionate about it. They spend time researching its cultural significance and heritage. But how do you know if the tea you are drinking is made from pure leaves and not adulterated or torn leaves? Difficult to detect. To help you, the country’s top food regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has shared a video on Instagram.

The video details the process of detecting if your tea leaves are adulterated.

The simple test uses filter paper. Spread the teacups on the filter paper and sprinkle water over them to moisten the paper. After a few minutes, remove the leaves and wash the paper with tap water. Then look at the spots on the paper against the light. If the tea leaves are not adulterated, no staining will be observed on the paper. Filter paper containing adulterated tea leaves will have blackish-brown spots.
