To highlight the importance of reducing the use of motor vehicles in daily life towards environmental protection, Collector P. Raman Saraswati decided to walk his office on Monday.
As usual, his driver had kept his government vehicle ready on the verandah of the Collector’s bungalow on Monday morning. But, Ms. Saraswati, who came out of her residence, was startled. She asked the driver to stop at the camp office and started walking towards her office located about 700 meters from her residence. Shocked by his action, the collector’s personal clerk and some of his office staff including the “dafedar” also followed him.
They are said to have taken the decision to effect the DO letter by Chief Secretary V. Irai Anbu, who asked officials across the state to avoid motor vehicles reaching the office on Wednesday so as to contribute to preserving the environment. Can you
“Each of us needs to take steps to do something to preserve the environment. Except in unavoidable circumstances, I avoid field inspections on Mondays as collectors have to be at the headquarters. So, I have taken every Monday Have decided to avoid taking vehicle to go to office,” said Ms. Saraswati Hindu,
She said she had instructed her subordinates and department heads to avoid going to their offices by vehicles at least once a week, preferably on Wednesdays. But, she could not force them.
“Just minutes after I went to my office on Monday, positive messages came in from different areas. It was unexpected. I would be happy if it has a positive impact on the society,” said Ms. Saraswati.
