A defense spokesperson told PTI that the Army on Saturday dedicated the soft launch of Kashmir’s first floating village on the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Col Amron Mousavi, in a statement in Srinagar, said that Kachari Mohalla was commissioned as a sample tourist floating village by the General Officer Commanding of Chinar Corps, Lt Gen DP Pandey and Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Pandurang K Pol.
“#Chinacorps Commander in association with Div Com Kashmir dedicated Kachri Mohalla of Dal Lake as Sample Tourist Floating Village to the citizens. He appreciated the efforts of the residents and the government department in supporting the initiative. He reiterated Dal Lake’s place as the crown of Kashmir.”
Lt Gen Pandey said that Dal Lake is the jewel in the crown of Kashmir and it is the responsibility of all citizens to keep it clean, especially those who have made the lake their home. He appreciated the Divisional Commissioner, the Vice Chancellor of JK Lake Conservation and Management Authority and all the 15 government departments involved in supporting the initiative, the statement said. Lt Gen Pandey said that the Kachari Mohalla model will be replicated in five more habitations and gradually spread to all 55 habitations.
Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a surge in tourism in the last few months. Officials say that 7,000 holidaymakers have reached Kashmir daily in the last three days, taking the number to 1.60 lakh in March. In January and February, between 61,400 and 1.05 lakh guests arrived in the Valley, despite disruptions in air and surface transport due to bad weather. This number is expected to increase further in the next three months. A look around Dal Lake shows that the footfall is huge. Every morning or evening, the lake area and the boulevard are brimming with tourists. The shores of the lake appear to be full of predators that set sail on its waters. Hotels and eateries are booming, while cabs packed with tourists add to the madness of traffic that Srinagar becomes during peak hours.
