The Union Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh told in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that Indian ocean In 2021, six oceanic heatwaves were observed over a period of 52 days. This information comes as the effects of climate change become unavoidable.
Singh said that the temperature of the Indian Ocean has increased by 0.15 degree Celsius per decade. The information can be cited as the cause of the sea, the Bay of Bengal, facing six meteorological phenomena,
“These heatwaves did not break all previous records but were above normal. The western Indian Ocean heatwave in 2021 was in the top four years in terms of number of events,” Singh said in his reply.
The minister said that the western Indian Ocean Region Marine heatwave events experienced a four-fold increase (increasing at a rate of 1.5 events per decade) and a two- to three-fold increase (at a rate of 0.5 events per decade) in the northern Bay of Bengal.
“In recent decades, the tropical Indian Ocean experienced a rapid increase in ocean warming with an average increase of about 1 °C in sea surface temperature (SST) at a rate of 0.15 °C per decade over the period 1951–2015. has experienced.” said the Ministry of Science and Technology.
A recent study by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) also shed light on the situation. The study revealed that there were a total of 66 oceanic heat wave (MHW) events in the western Indian Ocean, while there were 94 events in the Bay of Bengal.
“The monsoon forecast models used by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) incorporate sea surface temperatures as input data. These forecasts can be used for advance planning and disaster management,” Read the written answer.
effect of sea level rise
A report released by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a dire warning to India that 12 of the country’s coastal cities could be submerged by the turn of the century.
Cities could be nearly three feet underwater by the end of the century, a climate change report has warned. Cities include Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Visakhapatnam.
Researchers predict that due to rising temperatures, extreme ocean events along the coast will be 100 times greater by the end of the century.
Globally, the regions most affected include the Southern Hemisphere, locations along the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Peninsula, the southern part of the Pacific Coast of North America, and regions including Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Philippines and Indonesia.
