Ashes, 5th Test: Australia on top after 17 wickets on Day 2 in Hobart

England’s batting woes in the Ashes continued as Australia’s tailenders bowled them out for 303 in their first innings in the fifth day-night Test in Hobart on Saturday. 17 wickets fell on the day as Australia were bowled out for 303 in the opening session and England’s first innings ended at 188 under the floodlights of the night session.

England had time to bowl David Warner for a pair, Marnus Labuschagne for five and Usman Khawaja for 11 as the visiting bowlers got bounce and bounce off the pink ball. Australia reached the close of the game at 37 for three with a lead of 152.

Hobart Ashes Test, Day 2: Highlights

Warner was dismissed by Stuart Broad for the 14th time in Broad’s Test career as the pacer became England’s most prolific bowler in an Ashes Test with his 129th wicket.

Steve Smith, who had scored an unbeaten 17, and nightwatchman Scott Boland, not out on three, will resume on Sunday and prepare to wrap up the hosts in a 4-0 series draw to maintain Australia’s lead.

Pat Cummins had earlier taken 4-45 to lead Australia’s attack as England’s batting collapsed once again in the face of unbridled pace.

England got off to a catastrophic start with Rory Burns being run out with only two runs on the board, and no English batsman looked like approaching the second century of the series for the tourists.

David Malan (25) and his captain Joe Root (34) put on a 49-run partnership that looked to be adding some strength to England’s innings, but Cummins got them both out in short order.

Chris Woakes was dropped twice in 36, and Sam Billings scored 29 in his first Test innings before he was caught for a boundary by Boland off Cameron Green.

Lyon cameo took Australia past 300 in first innings

Nathan Lyon (31) had earlier resumed 241-6 half of the runs added by Australia in the afternoon.

Mark Wood (3/115) took two quick wickets of Mitchell Starc (3) and Cummins (2), but Lyon disappointed England by hitting the fast bowler for three sixes and a four.

Alex Carey made 24 off 60 balls off Chris Woakes (2/64) at his stumps, but Lyon put on 23 runs for the last wicket with Scott Boland (10 not out).

England’s effort was not helped early on as a shorter bowler, Ollie Robinson is still suffering from a back cramp that left him off the field on Friday. The fast bowler returned to bowl in the evening session.
