ashes | Australia trapped Root close to Adelaide Test victory

Mitchell Starc removed England captain Joe Root on the last ball of the fourth day to set Australia up for victory in the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

Australia declared their second innings at 230–9 before the tea break, setting England an impossible winning target of 468 runs.

The Touring side was 82–4 at stumps, losing Root in the final over and suffering a second consecutive heavy defeat in the five-match series.

Ben Stokes, whose batting brilliance led to England’s most successful Ashes run chase at Leeds two years ago, was still 386 short of their target.

Australia showed their intent by dismissing opener Haseeb Hameed for a duck before tea and sent back David Malan, who scored 20 runs after the break.

England were briefly settled as Rory Burns, who had scored 17 runs in his last three innings on this tour, stood firm before departing for 34, caught by Steve Smith at the slip of a Jhye Richardson lifter.

Starc dealt a painful blow to Root in his stomach before dismissing the England captain to cap another satisfying day for Australia.

Earlier, Marnus Labuschagne chased down his first innings with a half-century and Travis Head made 51 as Australia declared at 230-9 half an hour before the tea break.

England took three wickets in the first session, but Labuschagne and Head settled any nerves in Australia’s camp before the announcement of stand-in captain Smith.

West Indies holds the record for the most successful fourth innings total of 418 runs against Australia in 2003.

England’s most successful Ashes target came two years ago at Leeds when they chased down their 359-run target thanks to Stokes’ scintillating century.

Richardson dismissed Haseeb Hameed for a duck and took 12 deliveries to help the English wicket fall.

Starc was treated for a back injury he suffered while batting, but did not show any ill effects.

Stokes temporarily took over the captaincy of England as Root had a hospital scan after suffering a stomach injury during Sunday’s practice and was out on the field following his dismissal to complete a disappointing day for his team.
