Guwahati: Assam Police challenged in Guwahati High Court on Monday barpeta District court’s remarks against the police in Jignesho Mevanibail order.
A court in Assam’s Barpeta district on Friday granted bail to independent Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani after a judge pulled up the state police for registering a “false FIR” against a Dalit leader in a “fabricated” case of molesting a policeman. and requested the Gauhati High Court. Court to prevent police from turning Assam into a police state.
In his 13-page judgment, citing false FIRs and other police action cases, the judge said a copy of the order would be sent to the Guwahati HC for the Chief Justice to look into this aspect and see if it could be converted into one. can be taken as Public interest litigation to check police excesses in the state.
Mevani alleged that his arrest by the Assam Police was a pre-planned conspiracy “designed” by the Prime Minister’s Office to “destroy” him ahead of the assembly elections in the state. “My arrest is a cowardly act of 56 inches and it has undermined the pride of Gujarat,” Mevani told reporters in a veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi using the statement that he had a 56-inch chest.
Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police on April 20 from Palanpur in a case related to “objectionable” tweets against PM Narendra Modi. After spending three days in police custody and one day in judicial custody, he was granted bail on April 25. He was soon arrested again by the Barpeta police and charged with assaulting a female officer.
