At least four more people, including two children, died in flood in assam In the last 24 hours, the death toll rose to 121 on Saturday. One death each has been reported from Barpeta, Cachar, Darang and Golaghat districts.
Though the flood situation in Assam improved slightly on Saturday, over 25.10 lakh in 2,894 villages in the state’s 27 districts – Bajli, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara More people – Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur and Udalguri – are still affected by the floods.
Barpeta remained the worst-affected district with around 7.50 lakh people affected, followed by over 5.11 lakh people who are yet to get relief from the floods.
On the other hand, over 2.33 lakh people are still in 637 relief camps. More than 80,346 hectares of agricultural land has been affected by the flood waters.
The flood situation in Silchar town of Cachar district in southern Assam remained grim and many areas remained submerged for the sixth consecutive day. On June 17, an embankment collapsed in Bethukandi, about four kilometers from the city, leaving more than two lakh people badly affected by the flood waters.
Though the Barak river adjoining Silchar city is receding, the plight of the people remains the same due to no electricity and acute drinking water shortage for the last six days.
Around 2.78 lakh people are affected in the district with 96,689 people in Silchar city alone. A total population of 1,09,868 are taking shelter in 224 relief camps in the district, including 25,148 in Silchar.
The Brahmaputra and Kopili rivers are flowing above the danger mark in Dhubri and Nagaon districts respectively.
