Assam floods: Death toll rises to 24, over 7.2 lakh affected

The flood situation in Assam worsened on Sunday, with six more people, including two children, losing their lives and nearly 7.2 lakh people in 22 districts. According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), four people drowned in Kampur revenue division of Nagaon district.

One person in Doboka in Hojai district and a child in Silchar in Cachar district also died in the floods. The death toll in the entire Assam due to floods and landslides this year has now risen to 24. The ASDMA said that over 7,19,540 people have been affected in several districts – Barpeta, Vishwanath, Cachar, Darang, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Udalguri.

Nagaon is the worst-affected with around 3.46 lakh people in distress, followed by Cachar (over 2.29 lakh people) and Hojai (over 58,300 people). Till Saturday, over 6.8 lakh people were affected by the floods in 31 districts of the state. At present, 2,095 villages are submerged in water and 95,473.51 hectares of crop area in the state has been damaged, the ASDMA bulletin said. It said authorities are operating 421 relief camps and distribution centers in eight districts where 91,518 people, including 18,626 children, are taking shelter.

So far, around 253 people have been evacuated from various flood-affected parts of Assam. Heavy erosion has been observed in other districts including Barpeta, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, Nalbari and Udalguri, the bulletin said. place. The ASDMA warned that the tributaries of the Brahmaputra were flowing above the danger mark at Dharmatul and Kopili in Kampur and Disang at Nangalmuraghat.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that he discussed the issues related to national highways in the northeastern state with NHAI President Alka Upadhyay in New Delhi. He said on Twitter, “I emphasize on the immediate repair of National Highways affected by floods and landslides and timely completion of ongoing projects.”
