The last date for enrollment is 15 February. The State Election Commission notified that scrutiny of nominations would be done on February 17, while February 20 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Counting of EVMs will take place on March 9.
EVMs are going to be used for the first time in any local body elections in the state and voting machines will be used at all the polling stations.
The electoral rolls published for municipal boards with respect to January 1, 2022 will be used for municipal elections. In view of the situation of Kovid, the State Election Commission has banned road shows, hiking with bicycle, motorcycle and vehicle rallies And take out processions in the cities where elections will be held. State Election Commissioner Alok Kumar said that by February 15, the commission will review the status of Kovid. Kumar said, “If there is any change in the state government’s COVID guidelines, we will review it accordingly. At a time, 15 persons or associates can campaign from door to door along with the candidates.”
An updated guideline for the management of COVID-19 in municipal elections has been prepared based on the ECI guidelines with inputs from the State Home Department and State Disaster Management Agency. “There will be 13 days for campaigning,” Kumar said at a press conference. “Adequate number of EVMs have been made available and all steps have been taken to ensure smooth conduct of elections with the help of these machines,” he said.
Kumar said that like assembly elections and general elections, photo voter lists have been prepared for urban elections as well. “The voter lists have pictures with the names of voters. This is to improve transparency and credibility,” he said.
About four years ago, 38 municipal committees in Assam were upgraded to municipal boards and all municipal boards now have at least 10 wards. Kumar said, “The number of municipal wards of municipal boards has increased significantly. The area of ​​the ward is small but the number has increased. Cities which used to have three to five wards now have at least 10 wards. ”
Notification has not been issued only for Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) as the subject of election of SMB is under consideration in Gauhati High Court. There are 2,054 polling stations in municipal boards where elections will be held for 977 wards. Dibrugarh has maximum 129 polling stations where maximum 1.7 lakh voters are registered to exercise their franchise.
