Of the seven seats where by-polls were held, the BJP was in power in three seats and the Congress in two, while the Shiv Sena and RJD had one seat each. Counting of votes will take place on November 6.
Voting in Mokama and Gopalganj concluded peacefully with 53.45% and 51.48% turnout respectively, which was lower than the 2020 assembly elections when the turnout in Mokama was 54.1% and Gopalganj 55.3%.
SP’s charge
In Gola Gokarnath, the bypoll ended amid allegations by the Samajwadi Party that some polling stations were occupied by BJP supporters, who drove away SP voters.
The seat is likely to see an increase in the polling percentage as compared to the 2022 elections as the latest figures by the Election Commission (EC) till 5 pm recorded 55.68% turnout, which is 7% more than the last assembly election.
The bypoll was necessitated by the death of BJP MLA Arvind Giri in September, the first election test for newly appointed BJP state president Bhupinder Singh Choudhary and general secretary (organisation) Dharampal.
The by-election in Mokama was necessitated after the sitting MLA of Rashtriya Janata Dal and bahubali (Strong Man) Anant Singh alias Chhote Sarkar (Mini Sarkar) was convicted in the arms confiscation case and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The by-election in Gopalganj was held after the death of BJP MLA Subhash Singh after prolonged illness. In contrast, Mumbai’s Andheri (East) saw the lowest turnout at 31.74%, as no major political party was in the fray except Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray-backed Rutuja Ramesh Latte.
The metropolitan assembly constituency has 2,71,502 registered voters, mostly lower middle class and middle class, of whom only 86,000 participated in the polls. Polling in 256 booths began at 7 am and went on till 6 pm. It had a sluggish start with 3.61% turnout in the first two hours. It was recorded at 9.72% at 11 am and 16.89% at 1 pm; There was 22.85 per cent polling till 3 pm and 28.77% an hour before the 5 pm deadline.
talking to HinduMaharashtra’s Additional Chief Secretary and Chief Electoral Officer Shrikant Deshpande said that polling was conducted peacefully as per schedule. “However, the overall turnout was very low,” he said.
Meanwhile, amidst allegations of rigging and clashes between supporters of rival candidates in the Dhamnagar bypoll in Odisha, 58.53 per cent of the 2.38 lakh voters exercised their franchise till 5 pm.
