Riyadh: over 130 Yemen rebels have been killed in air strikes south of Marib, a flashpoint of the civil war, the Saudi-led coalition said on Tuesday.
Dozens of attacks were carried out in the Abdia district of Marib province. The city of Marib is the last outpost of the internationally recognized government in northern Yemen.
“We targeted nine military vehicles Houthi militia in Abdiya, and their losses exceeded 134 members,” said a coalition statement carried by official Saudi media.
Hundreds of Iran-backed Houthi rebels and forces have been killed since fighting for the strategically important city last month.
The Houthis warned in a video statement released on Tuesday that they were “on the edge of the city”.
Yahya Sari’s spokesman, Yahya Sari, said: “The rebel forces are “today on the fringes of the city of Marib on several sides” after defeating and completely freeing traitors and mercenaries from several districts in Marib.
Yemen has been devastated by seven years of conflict as Shia rebels pitted Shia rebels against the government Saudi-led military alliance.
Since the Houthis captured the capital Sanaa in 2014, tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced.
The latest toll came when the coalition announced the death of 156 rebels in similar attacks in Abdiya. Rebels rarely declare casualties in their own ranks.
The Houthis last month renewed their campaign to capture Marib. The resulting conflict and airstrikes have killed hundreds of rebels and loyalists.
On Sunday, six people were killed in a car-bombing that targeted a convoy carrying the governor of Aden, the temporary seat of government. He narrowly survived the attack.
Prime Minister Main Abdulmalek Said called the Aden explosion a “edge” by the rebels.
“It is an escalation of violence by the Houthi militia… a radical government in Iran is pushing the Houthis to more violence,” Maine Abdulmalek Saeed told reporters in Cairo.
