Australia Women retain Ashes urn after defending 205 runs in first ODI against England in Canberra

Australia Women retained the Ashes Earn after taking an unbeatable lead in the multi-format series on Thursday. The hosts won the first ODI in Canberra, defending just 205 runs, scripting a memorable Ashes win.

Australia won the first T20I of the 3-match series last month before the last two matches were canceled due to wet weather in Adelaide. Australia hold on to the draw Despite a valiant effort from England on a thrilling final day in Canberra, in the only Test of the Ashes series.

With the win in the first ODI, Australia took an unassailable 8-4 lead in the Ashes series. England have a chance to level the series but the Ashes earned will remain in Australia.

Facing a win-win situation, England women won the toss on Thursday and opted to bowl in the first ODI. He was spot on with the new ball as Australia were reduced to 67/4 after losing opener Rachel Haynes and all-rounder Ellyse Perry cheaply.

However, Beth Mooney led her recovery, scoring 73 off 91 balls to push Australia to 205 for 9 at the end of 50 overs. There were useful contributions from Alyssa Healy (27) and captain Meg Lanning (28) and all-rounder Tahila McGrath (29), but Mooney stood like a rock to avoid a collapse.

Mooney hit a six and eight fours in his stroke-filled 73 which proved decisive in the end.

In reply, Darcy Brown led the show for Australia with the ball, taking 4 for 34 in his 10-over spell. Megan Schutt, Jess Jonassen and McGrath all took 2-2 wickets as England were bowled out for 178 in just 45 overs.

While England’s top-order failed, Nat Sciver scored 45 and lower-order batsman Katherine Brunt scored an unbeaten 32, but this was not enough as England fell short of the target by 28 runs.

Both the teams will meet in the last two ODIs on February 6 and 8 at the Junction Oval.
