Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has released the monthly sales numbers for October 2021. Total passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market last month stood at 2,26,353 units, a year-on-year decline of 27 per cent over the previous month. In October 2020, 3,10,694 vehicles were sold. SIAM says that while manufacturers were banking on recovery in the festive season, shortage of semiconductor chips and steep rise in raw material costs are playing a big role for the auto industry.

Total two-wheeler sales for October 2021 stood at 15,41,621 units, a decline of nearly 25 per cent as compared to 20,53,814 units sold during the same month in 2020. As per the SIAM report, for the three-wheeler segment, 31,774 three-wheelers were sold in the domestic market last month, a growth of 19 per cent as compared to 26,684 units sold in October 2020. SIAM says the number of three-wheelers sold in October 2021 was higher than the previous year, still less than half as compared to 66,985 units sold in October 2019.

The total two-wheeler sales in October 2021 stood at 15,41,621 units, which is about 25 per cent lower than in October 2020.
Total auto sales for October 2021 stood at 17,99,750 units, a decline of nearly 25 per cent as compared to 23,91,192 vehicles sold during the same month last year. Also, the total production of passenger vehicles, three wheelers, two wheelers and quadricycles stood at 22,14,745 units during October 2021. Compared to 2,830,844 vehicles produced in October 2020, the vehicle production witnessed a decline of around 22 per cent. Note, all numbers mentioned above do not include data for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors and Volvo Auto.

Last month, 31,774 three wheelers were sold in the domestic market, an increase of 19 percent.
As for exports, in the month of October 2021, PV exports fell by 2 per cent to 39,666 units as compared to the same period in 2020. Three-wheeler exports remained stagnant at 42,696 units, while two-wheeler exports witnessed less than 1 per cent for October. Percentage increase at 374,072 units. Total auto exports also remained stable at 456,698 units.
