Back pain after Omicron recovery? doctor explains why

The spread of COVID, which started in early 2020, is still continuing not only in India but across the world. If the situation looks normal, suddenly a new form of Kovid-19, omicron, emerges and begins to wreak more havoc than expected. While the delta variant was one of the sole reasons behind the second wave in India, it is believed to be behind a possible third wave in the country, given the spike in Omicron cases.

Although doctors and researchers have claimed that Omicron’s symptoms are milder and less severe than the delta version, many cured patients are now complaining of body aches and lethargy.

Harish Chafle, Senior Consultant – Pulmonology & Critical Care, explains the causes of back pain while recovering from Omicron at Global Hospital, Parel, Mumbai.

What causes this post-recovery pain?

It is a well known fact that myalgia is commonly seen in viral infections. COVID is no exception, but we are seeing more cases of back pain with Omicron even after recovery, which patients describe as weakness. However, since data on Omicron is limited and gene sequencing is expensive, the reason is “difficult to explain” although it is a possibility that this variant is causing more myalgia than any other type of recovery, due to inflammatory mediators. Is. Another reason for this could be the fact that this variant is affecting the musculoskeletal system more than any other variant before.

What is the course of treatment?

Once one recovers from the virus, one must continue to take all precautionary measures, such as wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing. Having said that, if you have just recovered from an illness, don’t put too much stress on your body to prevent post-recovery myalgia from causing too much discomfort. Give yourself time to fully recover. Rest is very important and if you are a fitness enthusiast, do not start with heavy workouts. Rather take it one step at a time. Post-Covid syndrome is real and it is important that the points focus for the body to heal.

Continue to hydrate adequately as the body needs a lot of fluids during the recovery phase. If myalgia is severe, basic anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving medications may be taken as advised by your treating doctor. But for a period of 3 to 5 days and not more than that. Doing regular stretching exercises at home will help relieve back pain in the post-recovery period. In addition, one should check serum vitamin D3 levels and replace them if found to be deficient. Since low vitamin D3 is a common cause of myalgia.

Just the country is battling with the increasing number of covid-19 case, Omron, the highly permeable variant and going up. The Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday said India added 1,94,720 new coronavirus infections, taking the total number of Covid-19 cases to 3,60,70,510, including 4,868 cases of the Omicron variant.
