The 66-yard kick surpassed the previous record for longest field goal set by Matt Prater in 2013 with a 64-yard conversion.
Tucker’s kick caused great celebration among the Ravens’ players as they were surrounded by their teammates.
In the pre-game warm-up, Tucker failed from 65 yards. But when time ran out, he explained that he found “something divinely inspired” to make a game-cleaning kick.
“When you’re that far, you have to drop a certain amount of your technique… I hope it’s just a little more aggressive in it.”
After quarterback Lamar Jackson had less than a minute left for Sammy Watkins with a 36-yard pass and no timeout to set up a Tucker kick, it closed a remarkable final sequence for the Ravens.
Lions fans must have been sick of Tucker’s sight by now, as it’s been eight years since he scored a 61-yard game-winning field goal to defeat the same team.
Tucker’s NFL-record 66-yard field goal on Sunday marks the second time in Lions history that he has lost a game on a record-setting field goal. On November 8, 1970, New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey beat the Lions in New Orleans to set a 63-yard record.
The record kick sealed a crucial victory for the Ravens, as they were tied at the top of the AFC North with the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns with a 2–1 record.
