New Delhi: “Abide with me”, one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite Christian hymns, has been dropped from this year. Beating Retreat Celebrations on January 29, according to a brochure released by the Indian Army on Saturday.
“Abide with Me”, written in 1847 by Scottish Anglican poet and hymnologist Henry Francis Lyte, has been part of the Beating Retreat ceremony since 1950.
The brochure states that this year’s celebrations will conclude with ‘Saare Jahan Se Achcha’.
The Beating Retreat ended with the hymn “Abide with Me”.
The brochure also lists 26 tunes that will be played at this year’s festival Vijay Chowk,

The Beating Retreat is a centuries-old military tradition that dates back to the days when soldiers withdrew from battle at sunset, it has been noted.
As soon as the buglers heard the retreat, the soldiers stopped fighting, put on their weapons and withdrew from the battlefield.
