Sonification of Galaxy Cluster Abell 370.
The Hubble Telescope of the US space agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has shared a video from its Data Sonification Project on its official Instagram page.
As part of the project, NASA turns data from celestial objects into hypnotic sounds. The sonication of the Galaxy Cluster Abell 370 is the most recent in the sequence, and has left internet users speechless.
“Several hundred galaxies reside at the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 370, which is located about 4 billion light-years away from Earth. In this sonification, sound waves are generated depending on the brightness and position of the cosmic objects in the image. Bright light turns into a louder sound, and the frequency increases from the bottom of the image to the top,” NASA said in the caption.
Within two days, the post has garnered over 6.4 lakh views on Instagram.
One user said in the comment, “Space is exactly what it looks like.”
“Beautiful and scary,” said another user.
“Well, it’s not just beautifully awful,” added another.
Astronomers noticed an intriguing arc while imaging the Abell 370 galaxy cluster. The arc was not immediately recognized – better photographs were taken to reveal that it was a previously invisible type of astronomical artifact of the gravitational lens, with the lens at the center of an entire cluster of galaxies.
By studying Abell 370 and its images, astronomers could see galaxy clusters and the distribution of normal and dark matter in the universe.
