Let’s take a look at some of the health benefits of Stevia.
There can be many reasons that compel a person to eat sugar. Doctors often advise diabetics to avoid eating foods loaded with refined sugars as they already have high levels of sugar in their blood.
Eliminating sugar from the diet eliminates all the sweetness of the food. Because of them, many opt for sugar substitutes or artificial sweeteners that provide the needed sweetness but are much lower in calories.
One such alternative to traditional sugar that has gained popularity recently is stevia. It is a natural sweetener derived from the Stevia rebaudiana plant which is also known as candy leaf or sweet leaf. In terms of taste, stevia sugar is very strong and about 100 to 300 times sweeter than normal cane sugar.
While stevia tastes bitter and unpleasant to some people, many people consume it for its health benefits. People with diabetes or poor sugar control may prefer this option instead of cane sugar because stevia is free of carbohydrates and calories.
However, the question still remains whether you should completely replace cane sugar in your diet with stevia. For this, let’s take a look at some of the health benefits of Stevia.
- Stevia helps in weight management as it does not contain sugar and has almost zero calories. Eating sugar-laden drinks and foods leads to weight gain and poor control of blood sugar levels. Replacing this sugar with stevia helps reduce calorie intake without compromising on taste.
- Stevia is considered to be tooth-friendly as it does not produce acids that lead to tooth decay. Meanwhile, cane sugar comes into contact with the bacteria present in our mouth and gets fermented. This fermentation produces lactic acid which is responsible for cavities and enamel erosion. Stevia solves this problem because it has a different chemical structure and reacts differently to bacteria in the mouth.
- Also, unlike table sugar, which can raise blood sugar levels, stevia helps control it. Stevia sugar may also be effective in lowering blood pressure while some studies have also found that it promotes heart health and reduces high blood pressure.
