He said that in Siliguri, 12.73 per cent polling was recorded in the first two hours, while Chandannagar, Bidhannagar and Asansol recorded 11.62, 13.65 and 13.60 per cent respectively.

He said that elaborate security arrangements have been made by the police in all the four municipal areas located in different parts of the state for peaceful polling.

Outsiders were found in the voter line in two wards of Bidhanagar and one in Siliguri, the official said.

“Police detained BJP candidates Subhashish Das and Biswajit Mandal in the north Bengal city for their alleged involvement in creating problems outside polling stations,” a state election commission official said.

According to the SEC website, a total of 203 candidates are in the fray in 41 wards of Bidhannagar, while 200 candidates are in the fray for 47 seats of the Siliguri civic body.

120 candidates will contest for 33 wards in Chandangor and 430 for 106 wards in Asansol.

In Chandannagar, 120 candidates are contesting for 33 wards and 430 in Asansol’s 106 wards.

The counting of votes will take place on February 14.

In the 2015 elections, Siliguri was won by the Left Front, while three other municipal corporations were secured by the TMC. Elections to these civic bodies, along with over 100 others, were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation and were being governed by administrators.
