BENGALURU: How much has the Omicron-led third wave of COVID affected the city?

Even as COVID cases continue to rise in Karnataka, especially in Bengaluru, State Health Minister Dr. Sudhakar K said the current COVID peak situation is much better than the second wave, at least in terms of hospitalisations.

Disclosing the data, the minister showed that during the third week of April last year, when the second COVID wave peaked, the hospitalization rate was 30%, up from 22% in May. In comparison, in the current COVID wave, the hospitalization rate is just 6% and over 93% patients are recovering in home isolation.

However, due to the fact that the state is witnessing a huge spike in cases, the Health Minister insisted that there is no reason for complacency, please follow the COVID-appropriate behavior and stay safe.

Karnataka on Thursday reported 25,005 new cases of COVID-19, of which Bengaluru alone recorded 18,374 infections. With today’s count, the positivity rate in the city increased to 20%. More than 15,000 cases were reported in the city on Wednesday.

More COVID restrictions in Bengaluru

Amid the virus outbreak in the city, the state government today announced that an entire apartment complex in Bengaluru will be declared a ‘containment zone’ if more than three COVID-19 cases are detected.

“In case of three positive cases reported in case of apartment complex, or 100 meters perimeter or above and below floor or full block or small apartment, complete apartment complex shall be declared as ‘containment zone’ for a minimum period of seven days. , Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said.

It also said, all residents will be tested, and detailed contact tracing and monitoring will be done.

Bengaluru epicenter for third wave in Karnataka

Earlier this month, regarding Bengaluru, the minister informed that the city would be the epicenter of the peak of the third wave in the state.

“It has become very important to take special steps in Bengaluru. Bengaluru is an epicenter. It was an epicenter in the first wave and the second wave. It will also be the epicenter during the third wave,” Sudhakar was quoted as saying by PTI.

He said that since Bengaluru has an international airport, a lot of people come to the city, so special measures need to be implemented.
