Bharti Airtel, TCS partner for 5G based remote robotic operations

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel and IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) have joined hands to build a 5G-based remote working technology using robotics, according to sources. Both the companies are currently running trials at Airtel’s 5G lab in Manesar, Haryana.

A source told PTI, “Indian companies are looking at adopting indigenously developed technology for 5G. Airtel and TCS have joined hands for remote robotics operations using 5G. They have developed Airtel’s 5G lab. has been successfully tested.”

The source said that these solutions will enable remote robotic operations in potentially hazardous environments like mining, oil and gas fields etc.

Once the commercial rollout of 5G begins, both the companies will be interested in deploying these solutions in industrial sectors, the source said.

When contacted, TCS declined to comment as they were going through a silence period and an email query sent to Bharti Airtel did not elicit any response.

In June, Airtel and TCS announced a strategic partnership to implement 5G network solutions for India.

The Tata Group has developed O-RAN (Open Radio Access Network)-based radios and core elements and fully integrated the indigenous telecom stack, while Airtel has developed this indigenous solution as part of its 5G rollout plans in India. will be piloted and deployed.

Open RAN or Open Radio Access Network Architecture is the industry terminology for the interoperability and standardization of radio access network elements, including products and software from different vendors.

The commercial deployment of O-RAN, developed by the Tata Group, was to begin in January 2022, but due to the postponement in the government’s 5G spectrum auction plan, uncertainty remains around it.

The government has extended the 5G trial period till May 2022.
