West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will file her nomination for the Bhawanipur bypoll on Friday. CM Banerjee said, “I will file my nomination for Bhawanipur assembly by-election on September 10.”
The Trinamool Congress supremo today launched her campaign for the bypolls and accused the BJP of using central agencies to target its party leaders as soon as the dates for the assembly bypolls were announced.
He also alleged that the saffron party is targeting party general secretary and his nephew Abhishek Banerjee for political reasons, claiming that there is no valid case against him.
“We only know how we fought against all odds to win the assembly elections. During the assembly elections, BJP had brought goons from other states. I had to contest this by-election because a conspiracy was hatched against me (in Nandigram).”
Congress will not field a candidate against Banerjee in Bhawanipur by-election
Congress Bengal unit president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday said the party would not field its candidate against CM Banerjee in the Bhawanipur bypoll.
Last week, the Election Commission of India announced by-elections to be held on September 30 in three assembly seats in West Bengal – Bhabnipur, Jangipur and Samserganj.
The by-election is crucial for CM Banerjee’s victory if she wants to continue as the chief minister of the state.
In the state assembly elections held earlier this year, CM Banerjee had to face defeat at the hands of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram assembly constituency.
The BJP, which emerged as the main opposition party after the assembly elections in West Bengal, is yet to announce its candidate against Banerjee.
The TMC registered a landslide victory, winning 213 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly. The BJP lost the election but emerged as the second largest party with 77 seats.
