This time the fight will also be a legal battle in Kolkata’s Bhabnipur as the three main contestants are lawyers.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a law graduate from Kolkata’s Jogesh Chandra College and was a 1982 batch student. In the early days of his career, he practiced in the court. TMC leader Baisyanor Chatterjee, who is Banerjee’s election agent this time, said, “We have seen Didi in court. When she was in Congress, once our leader Pankaj Banerjee was arrested. She was standing in the court seeking bail. He is also enrolled in the Bar Council. He is senior in politics, and even as a lawyer he is senior to others here.”

Priyanka Tibrewal is an alumnus of Hazra Law College and is a well-known lawyer who has fought many cases for BJP. She has also been fighting the case of Babul Supriyo. After the 2021 election results, he fought a case of post-poll violence. Political pundits say that his performance as a lawyer has been outstanding in electoral violence cases and is a major reason why he got the ticket. Talking to News18, Tibrewal said, “I have already defeated him (Chief Minister) in court, this is the second time I am competing with him.”
CPI(M) candidate Shreejib Biswas is also a lawyer in Alipore Court. He is also a pass out from Hazra Law College. Since 2014, he has been practicing law and generally handles the affairs of Left parties. Biswas said, ‘It is a coincidence. I do not consider Mamata Banerjee a lawyer and she is only a politician. I have seen Priyanka as a senior lawyer, but the political battle and the legal battle are different.”
It will be interesting to see how the three candidates ‘legally’ compete with each other during the high-voltage campaign.
