BHU will now allow PhD students to teach after thesis submission, stipend of Rs 40,000

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has initiated Teach Fellowship for BHU to train its PhD students about the best practices of teaching and prepare them for an excellent academic career. It aims to “help them to nurture their skills to excel in professional life.” Teach for BHU fellowship will be for twelve months.

A student can apply six months before the expected date of thesis submission. Those selected for the fellowship will be involved in teaching (independent curriculum / participation in laboratory classes etc.) in schools including the University, its affiliated colleges and nearby disadvantaged schools. A candidate selected under TFB will receive a fellowship of Rs 40,000 per month and HRA of Rs 6000 over a period of 12 months.

BHU says that the objective behind the launch of this scheme is to provide opportunities to the interested and shortlisted PhD scholars, who want to make the best use of their time after submitting their thesis.

“Involving PhD students in teaching will help them acquire and demonstrate skills in leadership, people management and project management that may otherwise be difficult to obtain. (within 6 years from the date of admission, not the date of registration) will be eligible to apply for the scheme,” the university said in an official notice.

The decision to start the scheme in the governing body was taken in the meeting of Institution of Eminence, BHU under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof Sudhir K Jain.

To implement the scheme, a three-member committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Professor SK Singh of the Faculty of Education. Professor AK Singh, Department of Geography, Mahila Mahavidyalaya, BHU, and Professor Satyapal Sharma, Department of Hindi, Faculty of Arts, are the other two members of the committee.
