Bihar floor test: Nitish Kumar-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ to face trust vote today

The ruling Grand Alliance under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will prove majority in the Bihar Assembly today. The seven-party alliance has the support of 165 members with an effective strength of 242 in the assembly, making the floor test only a formality.

The Grand Alliance consists of JD-U (43), RJD (79), Congress (19), CPI-ML (12), CPI (02), CPM (02), and HAM(S) (4). MLA Sumit Kumar Singh and one MLA from AIMIM.

The present Bihar government has the support of all the parties in the assembly except the BJP.

No-confidence motion against Speaker:

Another major issue on the agenda is the removal of Bihar Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha by passing a no-confidence motion.

The ruling coalition was at first confident that Mr. Sinha would resign before the no-confidence motion was passed, but he appears to have remained in office even though the numbers are not in their favour.

Sinha refused to resign from his post and claimed that his self-respect would be hurt by resigning from the post of Speaker.

Responding to Sinha, Bihar Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Maheshwar Hazari replied to Sinha saying, “Neither the Speaker nor the Deputy Speaker can continue in the chair after the members express their lack of confidence. There is no point in denying the notice. Political power is all about numbers. The numbers are against him”

Meanwhile, the Grand Alliance has announced that it is going to bring a no-confidence motion against the Speaker and has declared Awadh Bihari Chowdhury as the Speaker’s choice.
