After successful implementation of mandatory hallmarking by Bureau of Indian Standards in 256 districts of the country with effect from June 23, 2021, wherein over 3 lakh gold items are hallmarked with HUID every day, BIS will start the second phase of mandatory hallmarking. From 1st June 2022.
This was notified by the government through the Hallmarking of Gold Jewelery and Gold Artifacts (Amendment) Order, 2022 on April 4, 2022, according to a BIS release issued here on Friday.
The second phase of mandatory hallmarking will cover three carats of gold jewellery/artifacts in addition to the 20, 23 and 24 carats mentioned in the Indian Standard IS 1417.
The list of districts is available on the BIS website. www.bis.gov.in
BIS has made a provision to allow a common consumer to get his unhallmarked gold jewelery checked for purity at a BIS approved Assaying and Hallmarking Center (AHC).
AHC will test the gold jewelery from the general consumers on priority basis and will provide a test report to the consumer.
The test report issued to the consumer will assure the consumer about the purity of his jewelery and will also be useful if the consumer wants to sell the jewelery lying with him.
The fee for testing gold jewelery of up to four articles is Rs 200. The fee for five or more items is Rs 45 per item.
Detailed guidelines on consumer testing of gold jewelery and a list of recognized assaying and hallmarking centers can be accessed through the BIS website.
The authenticity and purity of hallmarked gold jewelery having HUID number purchased by the consumer can also be verified by using ‘Verify HUID’ in BIS CARE app, which can be downloaded from Play Store.
