Agartala: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday announced candidates for the four bypolls to be held on June 23. Tripura Nomination of Assembly seats to Chief Minister Manik Saha from Town Bordowali Constituency.
BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said here that the party’s parliamentary board announced the names of four candidates in Delhi, along with fielding state BJP vice-president Ashok Sinha from the prestigious Agartala seat.
It also nominated two women candidates – Swapna Das Paul and Malina Debnath – for Soorma (SC) and Jubrajnagar assembly constituencies respectively. In his nearly three-decade-long political career, Tripura Chief Minister Saha, who is currently a Rajya Sabha member and state BJP president, will for the first time contest a direct election as he is not a member of the state assembly.
The opposition Congress on Saturday also announced two candidates – Sudip Roy Barman from Agartala seat and Ashish Kumar Saha from Town Bordowali constituency. According to party sources, the Congress is likely to announce its candidate for Jubarajanagar seat on Sunday and tie up with Tipraha Swadeshi Progressive Regional Alliance, headed by Tripura royal descendant Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Burman, for the Soorma seat reserved for Scheduled Castes. Political pundits say the bypolls to the four assembly seats will see a multi-cornered contest between the ruling BJP and the CPI(M)-led Left Front, Congress and Trinamool Congress and these bypolls are considered quasi-polls. Final for the 60-seat Tripura assembly ahead of next year’s general election.
The opposition Congress will also announce the names of candidates on Saturday or Sunday, however, party sources confirmed that Ashish Kumar Saha will contest from the Town Bordowali seat and Sudip Roy Burman will contest from his old seat, Agartala.
Both the ruling and opposition parties started their hectic campaigns soon after the Election Commission announced the schedule of politically important bypolls on May 25.
According to the schedule of the Election Commission, the last date for filing nominations is June 6, the next day the scrutiny will be done and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is June 9.
Counting of votes will take place on June 26.
The bypolls had to be held after the resignation of three BJP MLAs and the death of CPI(M) MLA Ramendra Chandra Devnath.
Three MLAs, Roy Burman (Agartala), Ashish Kumar Saha (Nagar Bordowali), Ashish Das (Soorma), quit the BJP and the assembly amid open resentment by a section of BJP MLAs against the then CM Deb.
Former BJP ministers Roy Burman and Saha had joined the Congress in February this year, while Das had joined the Trinamool Congress last year.
Elected six times from the Jubarajanagar constituency, Debnath was the Speaker of the Assembly several times.
He died on 2 February in Kolkata due to kidney failure.
