A BJP woman councilor in Mumbai on Thursday demanded reading of verses from the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita in the city’s civic schools “to inculcate the right kind of values in the next generation”. Yogita Koli, who hails from the western suburb of Malad, moved a proposal to this effect before the general body of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Koli is a member of BMC’s Women and Child Welfare Committee and Public Health Committee. In the notice of the motion, he said that the Bhagavad Gita is an ancient treatise on Indian philosophy and this text is also known as ‘Geetopanishad’ in the last composition of the Vedas. It contains the teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna about life.
It states that the knowledge of Bhagavad Gita gives supreme satisfaction and happiness to man and also helps him to find the way to salvation, which is why the Gita is called ‘Mokshashastra’. “It is believed that this scripture bestows supreme knowledge on human beings and guides them about the way of life,” it said.
The corporator further said that many philosophers, scientists and thinkers from different countries and religions of the world have always held this book in high esteem and considered it a lighthouse in the endless ocean of human life. “Indians consider it a holy book.
Therefore, it has become a custom to take oath by placing hands on it in the court. The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most important reference texts in the country and one of the most important texts in human history that talks about philosophy,” said the notice of the proposal.
Therefore, the Gita should be recited in the schools run by BMC so that the coming generation can get the right kind of values. Koli demanded that the civic commissioner be requested to submit a report on the feasibility of implementation of his demand. Elections to the Shiv Sena-ruled BMC are likely to be held in late March or early April this year.
