Election Commission of India data at 10.30 am shows that BJP is leading in 18 assembly seats out of the total 40 seats in the state.
While BJP is leading in 18 seats, Congress is leading in 12 seats. Present Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is leading by more than 300 votes in Sankelim assembly seat so far. The majority mark in the state is 21 assembly seats.
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party is leading in five seats, Election Commission data shows that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also leading in one seat.
In terms of vote share, BJP is leading with 33.74 per cent and Congress is second with 23.77 per cent vote share. Goa Forward Party is leading in one seat.
Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavlekar is trailing by 1,400 votes over Congress’s Alton d’Costa from Quepem constituency.
Former CM and Congress Legislature Party leader Digambar Kamat, a six-time MLA from Margao, is leading against Manohar Ajgaonkar of the BJP. Congress ally, Goa Forward Party chief Vijay Sardesai is leading in his stronghold in the Fatorda constituency.
In the Panaji Assembly seat, BJP’s Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate is leading over Independent candidate Utpal Parrikar, son of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Congress candidate and former BJP minister Michael Lobo has taken a comfortable lead in his stronghold Calangute constituency, while BJP’s Rohan Khaunte is leading in Porvorim seat.
With voters predicting a hung assembly, leaders of the BJP and Congress in Goa will keep a close eye on the popular verdict to assess their chances of forming the government in the state.
The Congress, which is also hopeful of forming the government, has asked its candidates to stay in a resort to prevent any attempts at “poaching”. Party leaders in Goa are understood to be in touch with state leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to “prevent the BJP from returning to power” in the state.
The BJP contested all 40 seats in the state, while the Goa Forward Party (GFP) entered into a pre-poll alliance with the Congress. The TMC had an alliance with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party for the elections.
