“BJP has sinned, people will have to suffer?”: Mamata Banerjee on Prophet row struggle

Clashes are taking place between police and protesters in Howrah since yesterday

Kolkata:

Amid clashes between protesters and police in West Bengal over a suspended BJP leader’s remarks on Prophet Muhammad for the second day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said some political parties want to incite riots and questioned whether people should be punished for the “sins” of the BJP. Why should you suffer?

“I have said this earlier also. For two days now, normal life has been disrupted in Howrah and incidents of violence have been carried out. There are some political parties behind this and they want to incite riots. But it will not be tolerated. More strict action will be taken. BJP has committed a sin, and people will have to suffer?”

In Howrah near Kolkata, protests against BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s remarks on Prophet Muhammad turned violent yesterday. This morning, another clash was reported in the same area.

News agency ANI reported that the police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters after stone-pelting. The administration has imposed prohibitory orders in the area till Wednesday. Officials said that till Monday the internet has been suspended across the district.

Earlier on Thursday, protesters blocked the road at many places in Howrah.

The chief minister then asked him to withdraw his agitation in the state and go to New Delhi to protest.

Ms Banerjee had told reporters that the comments of Nupur Sharma and now expelled BJP leader Naveen Kumar Jindal have tarnished India’s image across the world and they should be arrested.

Heavy protests are reported from nine states after Friday prayers.

In Jharkhand’s Ranchi, two people were shot dead and 12 others injured, four of them policemen, in a clash with police as protesters clashed with the police.

Clashes also broke out in several cities of Uttar Pradesh, in which more than 200 people were arrested.

Prohibitory orders have now been imposed in many areas of the country to prevent any untoward incident.
