BJP leader Roopa Ganguly demands CBI inquiry into Bengal train derailment

However, the West Bengal BJP chief says there should be no controversy over the human tragedy

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Roopa Ganguly on Friday, January 15, 2022, demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Bikaner-Guwahati Express derails in Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and claimed that there was no “bad news” about trains for years, but there has been an accident just before the assembly elections.

Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa will go to polls next month.

West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, however, said there should be no controversy over the human tragedy and the cause of the accident would be known only after the investigation is completed.

at least nine people killed 36 were injured when 12 coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express derailed near Domohani in Alipurduar sub-division of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). Some cans were found overturned or stacked on top of each other.

Ganguly said, “Can the train derail on its own? Does the railway track think that elections are going to happen soon? For years there was no bad news about trains. CBI inquiry should be ordered. Manav Don’t play with life.” Said in a post on his official Facebook account.

According to the NFR, 1,053 passengers were on board when the train derailed.

Shri Majumdar said that there should be no controversy on this issue as Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has already spoken on this.

The state BJP chief said, “There should be no controversy over human tragedy. The (Railway) minister has already spoken on the issue. An inquiry will establish the cause (of the accident).”

Earlier in the day, Vaishnav visited the train accident site in Jalpaiguri and said that preliminary reports suggest that there was “some problem” with the locomotive’s equipment.

He said the actual cause of the accident would be known only after the engine equipment was destroyed.

When asked about Ms. Ganguly’s demand, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the BJP leader was contradicting the Railway Minister and a high-level inquiry should be ordered into the incident.

“The tragic incident should not be politicised. He (Ganguly) has contradicted the Railway Minister, who did not explain what he said. Railways comes under the Centre. There should be a high-level inquiry,” he said.
