Belagavi: Leader of BJP In the border district, celebrating the 47th anniversary of the imposition of emergency by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, highlighting the need to educate the public about the inherently unconstitutional nature of the decision. Interacting with media representatives in Belagavi, local BJP leaders sought to remind the public about the excesses of the Emergency, when many innocent people as well as those opposed to the government were jailed.
Belagavi BJP spokesperson MB Girale said imposition of emergency was against democratic principles. “We want to inform the present generation that Emergency was a period when Indira Gandhi ruled as a dictator,” he said.
Recalling the struggle of the people of Belagavi against the Emergency, Girale said, “Appasaheb Mutekar, late Ganpatiro KulkarniHanmunthro Mutalik, Ramchandra JoshiVilasaro Pawar, and Panduranga Nikarge were among those who opposed the regime, and were sent to jail.” News Network
