The youth wing of the BJP in Assam on Monday claimed that its workers have lodged over 1,000 complaints against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at various police stations in the state. ,
However, it was not immediately known whether a case has been registered on the complaints.
A special DGP of Assam Police told PTI that there are a total of 329 police stations, 293 outposts and 151 patrol posts in the state. Though complaints can be lodged at outposts and patrol posts, the case can be registered only at the police station.
Assam Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) media convener Biswajit Khound claimed that over 1000 complaints have been filed against Gandhi, but failed to share the names of police stations or districts where they were lodged.
“Gandhi referred to India from Kashmir to Kerala and from Gujarat to West Bengal, thereby ending the Northeast from India. This posed a threat to the geographical integrity and security of India,” Khund said in a statement.
In one of the purported complaints lodged with the police and shared with the media, the BJYM alleged that Gandhi’s tweet indirectly supported China’s claim that the Northeast, especially Arunachal Pradesh, was a part of it. Khand alleged that Gandhi’s tweet reflects the “separatist mindset” of the oldest party.
“The Congress party is unfortunate (unfortunate) for India and Rahul Gandhi is India’s problem,” the statement said.
A BJP spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the state unit of the party’s Mahila Morcha has also lodged complaints against Gandhi at various police stations.
Gandhi tweeted about India’s diversity and strength on 10 February.
“There is strength in our union. Union of our cultures. Our Union of Diversity. Our Language Association. Union of our people. Our Union of States. Kashmir to Kerala. Gujarat to West Bengal. India is beautiful in all its colours. Don’t insult the spirit of India,” he had said on the microblogging platform.
The complaints against Gandhi came after FIRs were filed by Congress leaders in several states against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his controversial remarks about the Congress leader’s parents.
At a rally in polling Uttarakhand on February 11, Sarma attacked Gandhi for demanding proof of the September 2016 surgical strikes and the effectiveness of anti-Covid vaccines. In a personal attack on the Congress leader, he had asked whether the BJP had ever asked for proof of Rahul Gandhi being Rajiv Gandhi’s son.
Sarma’s remarks sparked a major controversy, with several opposition leaders including chief ministers criticizing the statement as “disappointing”.
