Nepalese authorities have recovered the black box from the Yeti Airlines plane that crashed yesterday with 72 people on board, news agency ANI quoted officials as saying. A twin-engine ATR 72 aircraft from Kathmandu on Sunday crashed in the tourist town of Pokhara, minutes before landing in clear weather. Sixty-eight passengers on board have been confirmed dead.
“The black box of the crashed plane has been found,” news agency ANI quoted Kathmandu airport official Sher Bahadur Thakur as saying.
Black Box is a flight data recorder that records all flight information through a special algorithm.
The Kathmandu-Pokhara flight had 68 passengers, including five Indians, and four crew members.
Yeti Airlines spokesperson Sudarshan Bartaula said there was no information about any survivors so far.
“The families have been contacted. Our sub-divisional magistrate and other officials are meeting them,” the officer said.
The plane crashed on the banks of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport about 20 minutes after take off, indicating that the plane may have been landing. The flight time between the two cities is 25 minutes.
