BMC directs schools to give online exam option to class 1-8 students

While schools have reopened in Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai has asked schools to give the option of online examination to students of classes 1 to 8.

BMC Education Officer Rajesh Kankal on Monday directed government and non-government schools not to force students to appear for offline exams and give them an alternative, reports the Times of India. With the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, schools in Mumbai are operating in a hybrid setup. However, some parents complained that students were being forced to take the exam in physical mode only.

According to media reports, the physical classes have received a good response from the students and more than 60 per cent attendance is being recorded in most of the schools. However, when it comes to exams, students are not in favor of the physical setup. As part of the no-fail policy, students of classes 1-8 are assessed on the basis of their performance in cycle tests, semesters and final exams, as reported by TOI.

While most of the schools are going ahead with online assessment for classes 1 to 8, the exams for class 9 to 12 are to be conducted in hybrid mode. Classes 9 to 12 come under the purview of the state education department. SSC (Class 10) exam in Maharashtra will be conducted offline from next month. However, the decision has received opposition from some students, who argued that conducting physical exams amid the pandemic was a threat to their health. Apart from this, students also claim that they have not got equal and quality education due to online classes.

After a prolonged social media campaign, these students led a protest march towards the home of Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad last month to raise their concerns. Class 10 and 12 students come under the population category eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. On January 3, the government started immunization for adolescents between the ages of 15 and 18.
