BMC Elections: Web Casting at 15 Highly Sensitive Booths | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: Web-casting facility will be available for live telecast of polling at at least 15 highly sensitive booths during the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
The move is aimed at ensuring incident free voting at those booths. The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) is likely to get permission from the State Election Commission (SEC) to install a webcam to monitor the voting process.
A list of sensitive and very sensitive booths will be prepared after meeting with the police. Then, we’ll decide which booths need web casting. ADM Prafulla Kumar Swain said that apart from the poll panel, designated officers in-charge of polling would be allowed to watch the live telecast of polling and take immediate measures in case of any untoward incident.
There will also be a computer along with a high-end webcam, officials said. A technical expert will also be deputed at the booth. “A special link will be provided to the designated officials along with the User ID and Password. They can watch the election process live and take appropriate action,” Swain said.
After the final list came out, the officials increased the number of booths from 699 (in the draft list) to 705. The final voter list will be published on Thursday.
The facility of web casting was available at the booths located in the last corporation elections. Saliya SahiApart from the booths in Bapuji Nagar, the biggest slum of the city, SundarpadaRaghunathpur, KhandagiriBooth near Rajdhani Hospital, Jaydev Vihar, Sainik School, Niladri Vihar and Patiya Village. Swain said election observers can take appropriate action based on the inputs received from the web casting.
In the last election, the installation of web cameras in polling stations and counting halls helped election officials to conduct polling as well as minimize disruption in the counting process.
Official sources said the live video footage helps the Election Commission investigate the disruption. The SEC looks at the footage in its office and instructs officials to intervene in the booths immediately. For the first time in 2014, web casting in urban elections was started in Bhubaneswar. Earlier, this facility was in use for the first time in the Athgarh assembly by-election.
