Platform and Design
The BMW i4 is based on an updated version of the BMW CLAR modular architecture that also underpins the current-gen G20 3 Series. It is basically an all-electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe available in overseas markets. Hence, apart from a few changes of course, the overall design of the EV remains the same as that of the regular sedan. Distinctive factors include a closed front kidney grille, different alloy wheels for better aerodynamics, slightly lower front and rear bumpers, as well as blue accents all around.
powertrain
The BMW i4 is expected to be offered in India in two variants – the eDrive40, and the more powerful M50 xDrive. The i4 eDrive 40 gets a rear axle-mounted electric motor that produces 340 PS power and 430 Nm torque, which is claimed to do 0 to 100 kmph in 5.7 seconds.
The i4 M50 xDrive, on the other hand, has two electric motors, one mounted on each axle, along with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. Together, both the motors produced 544 PS of maximum power and 795 Nm of peak torque. BMW claims that the i4 M50 can do xDrive and accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.9 seconds.
grade
Both the variants will likely be equipped with an 81 kWh battery pack, with the eDrive 40 having an estimated range of around 590 km (WLTP cycles), while the performance-oriented M50 xDrive has a range of 510 km (WLTP cycles). However, the ARAI-certified range may vary.
Interior and Features
On the inside, the i4 gets BMW’s curved display that houses a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster along with a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system runs BMW’s latest iDrive 8 user interface with support for OTA updates. While BMW is yet to reveal the equipment list of the electric sedan, we expect it to be offered with features like multi-zone climate control, wireless charging, sunroof, powered front seats, a range of connected features and more.
Expected Price and Competitors
While BMW is yet to reveal the price of the i4 electric sedan, we expect its price to start at Rs 80 lakh (ex-showroom). Upon arrival, the i4 will have no direct rivals in the market, but the top-end M50 xDrive variant will offer some competition to the entry-level versions of the Audi e-tron GT and the Porsche Taycan.
