BMW M has revealed its latest high performance model in the new M4 CSL. The coupe marks the revival of the coveted CSL badge which was first used by BMW in its homologation Special 3.0 CSL from the 1970s and the E46 M3 CSL from the early 2000s (discounting only the 3.0 CSL Homage concept) . BMW has made several cosmetic and under-the-skin changes, making the hardcore M4 CSL both lighter and more powerful than the standard M4 and M4 competition.

Starting with the weight, the CSL is about 100kg lighter than the standard rear-wheel drive M4. Weight reduction measures come in the form of extensive use of carbon fiber and carbon fiber reinforced plastics in the bodywork and cabin, lighter weight brake and suspension components, lightweight M alloy wheels, and no rear seats. The familiar B58 3.0-litre twin-turbo in-line-six engine gets an enhanced boost pressure, among other tweaks, up 503 bhp – and 542 bhp – from 650 Nm – of the competition. Unlike the standard M4, the CSL is rear-wheel drive (RWD) with power sent to the axles only through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. BMW claims a 0-100 kmph top speed of 3.9 seconds from the RWD M4 Competition Coupe, however the M4 Competition xDrive takes a hit in 3.5 seconds due to its superior traction.

Cosmetic changes to the nose help improve cooling and aerodynamics compared to the regular M4.

The CSL also gets its own unique suspension set-up with a new cast aluminum front strut brace, bespoke springs, dampers and wheel camber. The car also sits 8mm below the ground.

The M4 CSL gets several upgrades to increase both downforce and cooling. The oversized BMW kidney grille gets minimal louvers to maximize airflow into the compartment, while new vents along the lower bumper help channel air into the engine bay and brakes. The extra vents on the bonnet are designed to help let the heat out. The new side skirts, rear bumper and rear spoiler make up the design.

Inside, the M4 CSL is a tough two-seater with the rear seat removed to save weight. The CSL gets BMW M carbon-fibre bucket seats which help in saving around 23kg. The seats lack any frills like power adjustments and can simply be swung back and forth manually without the need for tools. Behind the seats is the storage space for the helmet. Carbon fiber is also widely used in the dashboard and center console. A six-point racing harness is an add-on option.

You still get BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch central touchscreen with M-specific graphics, a range of driver assistance systems and even a heads-up display is also. Unique to the CSL is a 10-level traction control system with stages 6-10 depending on motorsport applications for maximum grip and stability.
