BMW to make paint with bio-waste from sewage: Details explained – Times of India

BMW Group Is using innovative technologies in its efforts to improve sustainability and take advantage of new options to conserve resources and reduce emissions from painting bodywork. luxury car The manufacturer claims that it is the first to use a matte paint made from biomass instead of crude oil at its European plants. Renewable raw materials such as bio-waste or waste from sewage treatment plants serve as starting materials for paints.
bmw It has teamed up with German multinational chemical company BASF to make sustainable paint from sewage. BASF’s production process makes it possible to replace petroleum-based precursors, such as naphtha, with renewable raw materials from organic waste starting in the early stages of paint production. BMW claims that this not only reduces the consumption of fossil resources, but also avoids CO2 emissions associated with the production, transportation and processing of crude oil.
In addition, BMW Group Plants Leipzig and Rosslyn (South Africa) are also using sustainably produced corrosion protection. The Bavarian manufacturer claims that corrosion protection and matte paints are chemically identical to previously used paints, with all the same properties as conventionally manufactured body coatings.

“By reducing our use of fossil raw materials, we can conserve natural resources and lower CO2 emissions at the same time. To achieve this, we are increasingly relying on sustainability innovations in our supplier network,” says Joachim Post, a member of the management board of BMW AG responsible for the procurement and supplier network. “Innovative paints based on renewable raw materials are an important step in this direction.”
